Astronaut Reveals Depression After Wave of Online Abuse After Historic Trip

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her battle with depression after being subjected to a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.

The 34-year-old activist – known as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission in April, which also carried well-known figures.

The much-publicized journey was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response buried her dreams under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” she recounted in a social media post, recalling a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the aftermath of the flight.

She portrayed the press attention and digital reaction as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she revealed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

Ms. Nguyen, who has dedicated her work to female health science and operated research during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – from her scientific research and years of training to the historic significance of her background – was drowned out under the tide of misogyny.

She is most acclaimed for her pioneering work protecting the rights of survivors of assault.

Her own aspiration for spaceflight was paused after surviving a rape during her college days, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

The Fog Begins to Lift

In the time since achieving her goal, she reports that the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she thanked the followers whose kindness were her lifeline. “You were my salvation,” she affirmed.

She noted that despite the negativity, significant positive outcomes had emerged from the experience, including increased focus on her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.

Flight Details

The fully automated spacecraft launched from its launch site in April, carrying the all-female team on a 11-minute journey that passed the Kármán line of space.

The diverse crew also included accomplished professionals from different industries.

The enterprise behind the flight is a commercial aerospace company established by a well-known tech mogul.
