The fast bowler Poised for a Major Role in the Ashes

Pat Cummins bowling

Pat Cummins has claimed 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

The Australian chief selector the selector has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming historic rivalry.

Speculation had been growing that the veteran bowler might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no definitive call had been made regarding his involvement, with the Test matches scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in the WACA.

The selector shared that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the prospects of taking part.

"We're aware that time is getting short and there are permutations involved, aside from his injury, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he's going to play a key capacity. With luck from the opening match. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Past Concerns

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India recently after examinations confirmed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of back injuries, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns causing him to miss three Australian summers in four years.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to ensure his availability for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to recover fully for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, veteran batsman Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against India as a safety move because of an abdominal issue.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that Green will play in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the first Test as an batting and bowling option," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the initial matches in any case. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, even if it just sets him back for a short period, we just made the decision to approach this more conservatively."
