Uche Sparks Comfortable Palace Triumph at Shelbourne.
Despite entering their first-ever European campaign, Oliver Glasner's side are adapting very quickly. Missing star players like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and defender Daniel Muñoz, the Eagles left Dublin with a commanding win that all but secures them a place in the Europa Conference League playoffs.
Another three points in their next fixture against Finnish KuPS should be enough to secure direct passage to the last 16, especially after a previous setback against Strasbourg.
Squad Members Grasp the Moment
This occasion provided a platform for several Palace's fringe talent to shine. Christantus Uche, making only his second beginning after joining on loan from Getafe, notched the scoring with a clinical finish. Striker Eddie Nketiah added a another, finding the net for the second consecutive succession.
The Shelbourne side that had concluded their league season proved outmatched even for a largely second-string Palace lineup. The visitors were already depleted by the news that Mateta and Muñoz are sidelined with leg problems.
Dominance Asserted from the Start
Despite torrential rain in Dublin, Palace quickly took control. A flowing passing sequence in the 11th minute, initiated by Daichi Kamada's clever pass, allowed Nketiah to lay on Uche for a straightforward tap-in.
Youngster Adam Wharton went close minutes later, fizzing a long-range effort over the bar. Nketiah then appealed for a penalty after bursting into the area, but the referee dismissed the protests.
Ex-Arsenal striker did not have wait long to get his goal, prodding home from a yard out after Uche's shot had hit the post.
The home side were hanging on for dear life. Full-back Kameron Ledwidge was fortunate to avoid a booking for a couple of robust challenges on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards struck the woodwork with a header from a corner.
Yeremy Pino Seals the Game
The contest was effectively over eight minutes from half-time. Yeremy Pino meandered past a series of comically weak challenges before calmly slotting a shot past keeper Wessel Speel to make it 3-0.
Following the break, coach Oliver Glasner seized the opportunity to rest several individuals like Kamada and Wharton. Substitute Romain Esse came close to scoring his first touch, only to see his effort blocked.
Esse was desperately unlucky later on, seeing one attempt strike off each posts before being gathered on the line. Uche also blazed a sitter of a chance, indicating there is still scope for development in his game.
A solitary concern for Palace was a second-half injury to Justin Devenny, who limped off. This allowed 17-year-old forward Benji Casey to make his first-team debut, rounding off an otherwise positive evening for the traveling side.
