Zak Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with statements made by skipper Ben Stokes about the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made those words in several interviews following his team's defeat in the second Ashes series against the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes stated he had let his message to "drift around" within the playing group.

"I've done all the talking in recent days that I required," remarked Stokes.

However, following the opener made a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

Stokes issued his "weak men" observation subsequent to England suffered a loss in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The England squad afterwards took a break to Noosa between the second and third Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes revealed his players had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the messaging from the captain and head coach McCullum had remained consistent with their previous three years in leadership.

"It's been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Rapid Series Victory

The opener's wicket on day four was part of a crucial triple-strike by Australian spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a notional total of 435.

This means, Australia require just four more wickets on the last day to move to an insurmountable three-nil advantage with three Tests.

A loss would prolong the English team's drought in Australia to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes series loss.

The current battle will be completed in just 11 days of cricket – after England fell the initial matches in two and four days each.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined more swiftly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," said the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are facing elimination at this point."

"There remains plenty to play for and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. Australia is a very, very good side. It was always going to be tough touring here to face them. They entered as the front-runners coming in to it have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While Crawley's innings in the third Test likely secures doubts about his short-term future in the England team, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

Pope fell for 17 in England's second innings on Saturday, adding to his modest returns against the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a half-century and averages 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has played as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a poorer average.

But, Crawley insisted any suggestion Pope is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. It is talk from the outside. There's no discussion of that nature on Ollie in the camp," Crawley finished.
